Tesco Clubcard Voucher Schemes - Compared

Tesco Clubcard is one of the best retailer reward schemes in the UK. But, like any points scheme, there are efficient ways to redeem your points and there are inefficient ways to redeem your points.

Tesco Clubcard offers, generally speaking, 4 ways to redeem your clubcard points. The Tesco Clubcard Voucher Schemes. In this article, I’ll be comparing them to help you figure out how to obtain the best value.

How To Change Your Tesco Voucher Scheme

In order to change your Tesco Voucher Scheme, login to your Tesco Clubcard account, navigate to ‘Account Management’ and then ‘Voucher Schemes’.

Clubcard Vouchers

You can choose to redeem your Tesco Clubcard points for Clubcard Vouchers. You can then either directly spend the vouchers in store or you can redeem them with Clubcard Partners to obtain a greater value.

Clubcard Partners

You can then boost the value of your vouchers, up to 3x their normal value, with certain clubcard partners. Here is an incomplete list of partners with their current voucher offers (as of October 2019):

  • Cineworld Unlimited: £10 Vouchers = £30 Spend (3x)

  • Hilton Hotels: £2.50 Vouchers = £7.50 Spend (3x)

  • Hotels.com: £5 Vouchers = £15 Spend (3x)

  • Macdonald Hotels & Resorts: £2.50 Vouchers = £7.50 Spend (3x)

  • Now TV: £0.50 Vouchers = £1.50 Spend (3x)

  • P&O Ferries: £5 Vouchers = £15 Spend (3x)

  • Prezzo: £0.50 Vouchers = £1.50 Spend (3x)

  • Railcard: £1 Vouchers = £3 Spend (3x)

  • Tesco Mobile: £0.50 Vouchers = £1 Spend (2x)

The majority of Clubcard Partners offer vouchers valued at 3x that of the standard Tesco voucher. But there are some retailers, such as Tesco Mobile (2x value) that don’t.

Christmas Savers

If you want to save up for Christmas spending at Tesco, you have the option of choosing Tesco Christmas Savers. Basically, all of your points will be added up throughout the year and then, in November, you’ll be given Tesco vouchers which you can use for Christmas spending.

Christmas Voucher Top-Ups

You can also choose to top-up your Tesco Christmas Vouchers, with your own money, in store. You’ll receive a bonus if you do so and the bonus depends on how much you save throughout the year (before 15th October):

  • £25-49.50 top-up = £1.50 bonus

  • £50-99.50 top-up = £3 bonus

  • £100-199.50 top-up = £6 bonus

  • £200-360 top-up = £12 bonus (max bonus since max top-up value)

This means your bonus can be worth anything between 3% and 6%. This sounds good but there are a lot of T&Cs attached. For example, there are a list of excluded purchases (ie. you can’t put your Christmas Saver Vouchers towards these). These include Tesco and branded gift cards, online delivery charges and third party in-store sellers.

You also don’t receive clubcard points on your cash top-ups and your bonus vouchers are only valid for 2 months from date of issue.

Plus, you can’t boost the value of your Christmas Saver Vouchers by redeeming them with Clubcard Partners, or converting them to air miles with Virgin Atlantic or British Airways.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Miles

You can choose to automatically convert your Tesco Clubcard points into Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Miles.

Get 625 Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Miles for every 250 points earned

What’s A Virgin Atlantic Mile Worth?

To figure out if this offers good value for your points, you’ll have to take into account how much value you can expect to achieve from you Virgin Atlantic Miles.

Although this is very dependent on how you choose to redeem your miles, on average, you can expect to get around 0.5p and 1.5p per mile. This, of course, can be boosted further if you’re an efficient points spender.

And the miles aren’t just locked into Virgin Atlantic flights. You can spend your Virgin Atlantic miles with their partners, including but not limited to:

  • Air China

  • Air France (coming soon)

  • Air New Zealand

  • ANA (All Nippon Airways - Japan)

  • Delta

  • Hawaiian Airlines

  • Hilton Hotels

  • IHG Rewards

  • KLM (coming soon)

  • Singapore Airlines

  • South African Airways

  • Virgin Australia

British Airways Executive Club Avios

Tesco Clubcard Points can also be automatically converted into British Airways Executive Club Avios.

Tesco Clubcard Voucher Schemes - BA Executive Club Avios Option

What’s A BA Avios Point Worth?

The value of a British Airways Avios point depends on how it’s redeemed. On average, you can expect to get around 0.5p and 1.5p per avios point.

Avios, like Virgin Atlantic Miles (above), range in value because they can be redeemed efficiently or inefficiently. And, of course, values can exceed this range. We got great value from our Avios (close to 3p per point) on a recent trip to Venice, when we flew BA Club Europe.

British Airways Avios can also be spent with these partners (this list is non-conclusive):

  • American Airlines

  • Cathay Pacific

  • Finnair

  • Iberia

  • Japan Airlines

  • LATAM Airlines

  • Malaysia Airlines

  • Qantas

  • Qatar Airways

Which One Wins?

In terms of value, here’s how the Clubcard Voucher Scheme options compare:

  • 250 points = £2.50 in Tesco Vouchers (use in store) or up to £7.50 in Tesco Clubcard Partner Vouchers

  • 250 Points = £2.50 in Christmas Saver Vouchers

  • 250 Points = 625 VA Flying Miles = £3.12 to £9.37 Expected Value (Can Be A Lot Higher)

  • 250 Points = 600 BA Avios = £3 to £9 Expected Value Or Above (Can Be A Lot Higher)

However, as is usual with point redemptions, there is not really a clear winner since individual circumstances matter.

From my point of view, there is a clear loser and that’s the Christmas Saver scheme. The point redemption value is the lowest (250 points = £2.50 in vouchers) and the top-up bonuses are too limited. If you want to set aside money for Christmas, I’d suggest doing so in an FSCS protected bank account instead.

When comparing the other 3 options, I’d take into account your own financial goals.

Redeeming your points with a Tesco Clubcard partner (as long as they offer you the maximum 3x value), could offer you the best value. But, if you see yourself spending Virgin Atlantic Miles or BA Avios efficiently, both of these options have the potential to give you the greatest return.
