/LEGO City has really been a staple LEGO theme since it’s launch alongside LEGO minifigures, LEGO Castle and LEGO Space in 1978. Then called LEGO Town, the theme was rebranded to LEGO World in 2003 and then LEGO City in 2005. With over 1300 sets released, it’s no surprise that dominating the top tier of LEGO City pricing are a famous subset of LEGO City sets…trains!

10. LEGO City 60229 Rocket Assembly & Transport - £119.99

Released in June 2019, the LEGO Rocket Assembly and Transport Set comes with 1055 pieces. 7 minifigures are featured in this set: 2 astronauts, 2 ground crew technicians, a drone engineer, launch director and a scientist. 2 dark tan geodes with pink crystals were newly introduced for this set.

Trains have been a LEGO staple for over 50 years. The 677 piece LEGO Passenger Train carries on the tradition with some newly updated tech. Released in August 2018, this set was the first LEGO passenger train to introduce the Bluetooth-enabled Powered Up system.

Released all the way back in June 2010, the 839 piece LEGO City Cargo Train was actually the first to use the now-replaced Power Functions system. The train itself includes a locomotive car, tank card, flat car and container car.

The LEGO City Square set was released in June 2015. With 1683 pieces, it was, by far, the largest LEGO City set at the time of release. An array of 14 City minifigures were included and the build featured a coffee bar, news helicopter, LEGO Store, car dealership and tram.

Released in August 2015, the LEGO Heavy-Haul Train set comes with a red locomotive, hopper wagon and 2 flatbed wagons to secure the helicopter and backhoe. The train can be controlled via an 8-channel, 7-speed remote. 5 City minifigs are included in this 984 piece set, along with a generous 16 curved pieces and 12 straight pieces of track.

You can see where the 60098 Heavy Haul Train got it’s inspiration. This 888 piece LEGO Cargo Train was released in May 2014. Train sections include a blue locomotive, controllable via an 8-channel 7-speed controller, a cattle wagon, fuel wagon and cable drum wagon. This set comes with 20 curved and 8 straight pieces of rail track.

An August 2011-release, the LEGO Red Cargo Train includes 831 pieces and was designed to be a companion to the 2010-released yellow City Cargo Train. Flatbed, ballast ‘tipping and hazardous goods wagons are included, along with 16 curved and 8 straight pieces of track. Like other trains at this time, it relies on the Power Functions system for movement and control.

The September 2020-released LEGO City Main Square shares a lot of design similarities with the 2015 City Square. However, this model uses locations and minifig characters from the LEGO City Adventures animated series. The set is comprised of 1517 pieces and features 15 minifigures (if you include the statue). These include Mayor Fleck in Corn Cob Costume, Harl Hubbs and Freya McCloud.

Having been 3 years since the previous LEGO cargo train, the 1226 piece LEGO 60198 City Cargo Train was introduced in August 2018. Released alongside the City Passenger Train, both sets made use of the newer Bluetooth-enabled Powered Up system. The full train includes a green locomotive, log wagon, crane wagon and container wagon which you can drive on the 16 curved and 16 straight pieces of track.
