The 10 Most Expensive LEGO Technic Sets of All Time

Originally known as ‘Technical Sets’ when first introduced in 1977, LEGO Technic has been an iconic LEGO theme since the brand name emerged in 1982. With over 40 years of history, there’s no sign of Technic disappearing from the LEGO lineup. In fact, Technic sets, on average, are becoming larger, more complex and more expensive now than ever before.

Here, we break down the top 10 most expensive LEGO Technic sets of all time, by RRP.

10. LEGO Technic 42099 4X4 X-treme Off-Roader - £199.99

RRP £199.99 | $249.99 | €229.99

The LEGO 4X4 X-treme Off-Roader was the first Technic set to use LEGOs replacement of Power Functions called Powered Up when it was released in August 2019. The Powered Up platform allows users to control set functions via the TECHNIC CONTROL+ app. The set has a small part count (958 pieces) relative to it’s price but 8 of those parts are the 4 large wheels and tyre sets.

9. LEGO Technic 42070 6x6 All Terrain Tow Truck - £219.99

RRP £219.99 | $289.99 | €249.99

The 1862 piece LEGO 6x6 All Terrain Tow Truck was released in August 2017. With LEGO Technical sets being around since 1977, this flagship set was released for the theme’s 40th anniversary. Whilst the build featured Power Functions allowing you to move the vehicle, extend the outrigger, move the crane and lower the winch, the build proved lacklustre for some fans, especially given the high cost.

8. LEGO Technic 42082 Rough Terrain Crane - £229.99

RRP £229.99 | $299.99 | €229.99

Only marginally more expensive than the Tow Truck, the August 2018-released Rough Terrain Crane actually contained over double the part count (4057 pieces) of the 2017 truck set. A beast of a model, the set features a whole host of Power Functions including superstructure rotation, winch lifting and an extendable boom.

7. LEGO Technic 42114 6x6 Volvo Articulated Hauler - £229.99

RRP £229.99 | $249.99 | €249.99

One of the newer sets on the list, the 2193 piece 6x6 Volvo Hauler was released in August 2020. Using the Technic CONTROL+ app, you can drive the vehicle and raise or lower the bed. And, as a first for LEGO Technic, the build actually features an automated gearbox.

6. LEGO Technic 42056 Porsche 911 GT3 RS - £249.99

RRP £249.99 | $299.99 | €299.99

Straddling the line between LEGO Technic and Creator Expert is the LEGO Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Made in partnership with the famous car company, this 2704 piece build was released in July 2016 and is credited with creating a whole new line of LEGO Technic Supercars.

5. LEGO Technic 42129 4x4 Mercedes-Benz Zetros Trial Truck - £274.99

RRP £274.99 | $299.99 | €299.99

Released in August 2021, the 2108 piece LEGO 4x4 Mercedes-Benz Zetros Trial Truck follows on from other sets relying on the Technic CONTROL+ platform. Whilst the justification for the high cost stems from the significant selection of included electronic components, the end result didn’t justify the high price tag for most Technic fans.

4. LEGO Technic 42083 Bugatti Chiron - £329.99

RRP £329.99 | $349.99 | €369.99

Built to the same scale as the Technic Porsche 911 GT3 RS, the June 2018-released LEGO Bugatti Chiron proved a popular buy for many LEGO fans. Made in collaboration with Bugatti, the 3599 piece set features a detailed interior, functioning 8-speed gear box and key-adjustable rear wing spoiler.

3. LEGO Technic 42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 - £349.99

RRP £349.99 | $379.99 | €379.99

Another 1:8 scale detailed supercar replica, the 3696 piece LEGO Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 was released in June 2020. Having worked with Porsche to release the 911 GT3 4 years prior and Bugatti to release the Chiron in 2018, LEGO wanted to continue this popular line, this time, in collaboration with another famous Italian car company.

RRP £399.99 | $449.99 | €449.99

LEGO released the massive 4108 piece LEGO Liebherr R 9800 Excavator in October 2019. With 2 Bluetooth-controlled Smart Hubs, 3 XL Motors and 4 L Motors, this replica model is controlled via the Technic CONTROL+ app. Functions include drive, superstructure rotation, boom control and bucket control.

1. LEGO Technic 42131 Cat D11 Bulldozer - £419.99

RRP £419.99 | $449.99 | €449.99

The LEGO App-Controlled Cat D11 Bulldozer was released in September 2021. With 3854 pieces, the D11 actually has a smaller part count than the Liebherr R 9800. Similar to the Liebherr, the D11 can be controlled via the Technic CONTROL+ app. The set can be driven and the blade can be raised, lowered and tilted.
